BMW Classic narrative labels the 2986-cm³ six-cylinder engine M20, which is inconsistent with the established architectural context of the large six-cylinder line and therefore requires primary engine-document verification.

The encyclopedia does not silently replace the code. Status: ENGINE CODE = BMW ARCHIVE SAYS M20 / VERIFY.

BMW 633CSi update

BMW PressClub 2026 confirms:

• September 1979: DME digital engine electronics;
• output declined from 200 hp to 197 hp.

This is a genuine factory power revision and becomes separate engine-power row later.

BMW 628CSi end-date conflict

• BMW Group Classic detail card: 06/1979–05/1988.
• BMW PressClub 2026 anniversary article: says production until 1987.

Status: open conflict, likely calendar/model-year or editorial simplification.

BMW 635CSi

Important powertrain revisions:

1. 3453 cm³ / 218;
2. from May 1982: 3430 cm³ / 218;
3. MY1984 optional catalyst: 185;
4. from 1987 catalyst-only: 211 / 155 kW.

All four must remain distinct in ENGINE/MODEL MASTER DATABASE.

BMW M635CSi

• 04/1984–02/1989;
• M88/3;
• 3453 см³;
• 286 PS / 210 kW @ 6500;
• Vmax 255 км/ч on BMW Classic;
• reinforced 5-speed sports transmission;
• revised chassis;
• uprated brakes;
• battery relocated to rear for weight distribution.

⚠️ impossible catalyst-date statement

BMW Classic narrative says an S38B35 catalyst version was offered from November 1989, but the same card states production ended 02/1989.

This chronology is impossible as written.

M6 / S38 catalyst start = UNRESOLVED, pending another primary market source.

⚠️ M635CSi production conflict

Official BMW sources disagree:

• BMW M heritage article (2019): 5 855 built;
• BMW PressClub / BMW Museum anniversary article (2026): 5 655 built.

No silent choice. Production field = CONFLICT 5655 / 5855.

Motorsport

BMW Group 2026 confirms:

• Group A BMW 635CSi competition from 1983;
• European Touring Car Championship titles cited for 1984 and 1986;
• German Production Car Championship 1984.

Race cars do not inherit road-car 218 PS as a default specification.

Art Cars

Separate from production special editions:

• BMW 635CSi — Ernst Fuchs, 1982;
• BMW 635CSi — Robert Rauschenberg, 1986.

Art Car is not a road trim/model variant.
