BMW i3 was purpose-developed around electric drive and industrial-scale CFRP construction. Series production started in Leipzig in September 2013.

Electric motor

• 33 kWh gross;
• 27 kWh effectively usable in BMW Asia technical document;
• motor remains 125 kW / 170 hp;
• 0–100: 7.3 s;
• 50 kW DC fast charging;
• up to 11 kW three-phase AC in relevant European hardware specification.

120 Ah

• 37.9 kWh net;
• battery voltage: 352 V;
• i3: 170 hp / 250 Nm;
• i3s: 184 hp / 270 Nm.

BMW 2018:

• i3 WLTP range: 285–310 km;
• i3s: 270–285 km;
• everyday claim: around 260 km.

Range Extender (REx)

BMW i3 was also offered in selected markets with a small 650 cc two-cylinder petrol Range Extender.

Critical architecture:

• REx engine does not mechanically drive the wheels;
• it generates electricity / maintains battery state;
• rear wheels remain driven by the electric traction motor.

Confirmed model branches:

• i3 60 Ah REx;
• i3 94 Ah REx;
• 120 Ah REx in selected markets, notably North America.

REx is a range-extender EV architecture, not a conventional parallel hybrid.

Production

BMW:

• series production began September 2013;
• 250,000th i3 built shortly before production ended in June 2022;
• sold in more than 74 countries.

Special editions

i3s Edition RoadStyle

2019:

• i3s base;
• 184 hp;
• Fluid Black / E-Copper special appearance;
• worldwide production described by BMW as just under 1,000.

HomeRun Edition

Final-production celebration in 2022. Exact count is tracked in special-edition stage only when a direct BMW count is registered.

Charging milestones

Battery-generation-specific:

• 60 Ah: AC charging architecture earlier/lower-output;
• 94 Ah: up to 11 kW 3-phase AC in BMW European technical source, 50 kW DC;
• 120 Ah: 11 kW AC / 50 kW DC architecture in BMW technical data.
