The 4 Series became a separate BMW model family in 2013, taking over the two-door role previously associated with the 3 Series Coupé/Convertible.

F32 Coupé — 2013 launch

Launch headline:

• 420d;
• 428i;
• 435i.

The original launch power range was 184–306 hp.

Range expansion

Additional official family rows include:

• 420i;
• 430d;
• 435d xDrive;
• xDrive on selected petrol/diesel variants.

Confirmed:

• 435d xDrive: 230 kW / 313 hp.

F33 Convertible — 2014

Launch:

• 420d;
• 428i;
• 435i.

Retractable hardtop.

Later range broadly mirrors F32 with body-specific availability and performance, including high-output diesel xDrive derivatives.

F36 Gran Coupé — 2014

Separate 5-door fastback body.

Initial/early family:

• 420i;
• 428i;
• 435i;
• 418d / 420d / 430d / 435d depending update/market;
• xDrive on selected variants.

F36 is not an F32 trim.

2017 LCI / engine nomenclature transition

The 430i/440i names replace the earlier 428i/435i positions after the new modular engine transition.

440i performance example

BMW UK 2017:

• Coupé: 326 hp;
• 0–62 mph approx. 5.2 s manual / 5.0 s automatic;

• 420i xDrive;
• 430i xDrive;
• 440i xDrive;

• 435d xDrive.

435d xDrive is AWD-only in the relevant BMW range structure.

Production / plants

BMW 2017:

• nearly 400,000 first-generation 4 Series cars sold globally by end of 2016;
• F32 production: Munich;
• F33: Regensburg;
• F36: Dingolfing.

This is a sales milestone to date, not final generation production.
