BMW launched the second-generation 1 Series initially as F20 5-door.

Also announced:

F21 3-door — 2012 expansion

BMW broadened the engine ladder:

Later regular diesel:

• 114d: 70 kW / 95 hp.

BMW M135i

Early:

• 235 kW / 320 hp;
• 450 Nm.

xDrive:

• introduced 2012;
• 8-speed automatic standard;
• 0–100: 4.7 s.

By 2014/2015:

• official regional price lists already show 326 hp;
• 2015 LCI retains 326 hp and 450 Nm.

So: M135i 320 → 326 is a real factory power revision.

xDrive

BMW introduced xDrive to 1 Series in this generation.

Confirmed:

• M135i xDrive;
• 120d xDrive;
• later 118d xDrive.

Do not treat xDrive as trim:

• separate drivetrain;
• separate mass;
• separate acceleration;
• often automatic-only configuration.

BMW UK official:

Important engine-family changes:

• 116d moves to new 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel;
• diesels 118d/120d/125d move to new modular-family four-cylinders;
• output revisions are separate rows.

July 2016 engine-generation update

BMW replaced multiple petrol powertrains as the modular engine generation expanded.

Confirmed BMW factory changes:

• 120i: 135 kW / 184 hp;
• 125i: 165 kW / 224 hp;
• M135i is replaced at the top of the range by M140i.

M140i

• 250 kW / 340 hp;
• 500 Nm;
• F20 5-door / F21 3-door;
• RWD or xDrive;
• 0–100:
• 4.8 s manual;

M Sport ≠ M Performance

The regular 1 Series could be ordered in M Sport trim.

That does not make:

• 116i M Sport;
• 120d M Sport;
• 125i M Sport

into M Performance Automobiles.
